How to shoot a portrait in the shade

Shade

In the following video, I show you how I photograph a portrait outdoors, dealing with the elements of nature.

Here we go from shooting in direct sunlight to taking the person into deep shade.

In this video I explain:

How I go about photographing a portrait/model in the shade.

How I position the model to face into the wind.

What settings I use, and why

How I get that shallow depth of field

Notice the shallow depth of field I used where Milly is in-focus and the rocks in the background are out-of-focus. I explain exactly how I do this in this video. Remember the aperture training video in my essential skills video series, this is where we apply those techniques.

Hi Brent. From what I’ve seen of your video’s you have excelled yourself. Easy to understand and well presented. I’m also happy you included one of my photo’s in the opening training video. Keep up the good work.

    Thanks Brent
You make it easy to understand the very basics of what makes a good Portrait. I can read it everywhere, but seeing it in the actual shooting environment is so much more instructive and intuitive.
    Thanks and keep going.

Yes but I would go a little longer. Maybe another lens would get a better result but start with your 55mm and let me know how it goes. Brent

Is that a 70-200 lens? If not, which one is it?

      Yes, it’s the 70-200mm f4.0 lens
