Hey guys! We are travelling & I’ve just taken a couple of pictures with my family in front of the Australian War Memorial behind me.
First Image: Poor Quality
I wanted to show you the first one. As you can see, there are a couple of errors in this photo.
- My family is pretty dark
- My wife is wearing her sunglasses, which is not a good thing.
Second Image: Better Quality
The second is much better. What did I do?
- I got my wife to basically take her sunnies off
- I use the flash, outside in the sun.
So, you see what the flash does? It actually lights my family up in front of the Australian War Memorial. It helps pop-out the image.
Travel Photo Tip
So that’s a little tip when you’re out travelling with your family. Use your flash outdoors and take your sunnies off.
Don’t forget to leave a comment below and I’ll respond to them personally. Have a great day!

Hi Shantanu, I go into much more detail on light, aperture and shutterspeed in my essential photography skills course. Check it out here https://www.brentmailphotography.com/essential-skills-videos Brent
Thanks Brent – thanks for the tips, it is those little things that spoil a photo.
Great tip!! I've had this problem many times and now I know the solution.
Regards Howard in NZL
Glad you like it Howard. Great place NZ, I would like to go there again. Brent
Hi Brent, did you use the on board flash or a hotshoe flash?
I used the onboard flash – nothing too complex with this compact camera. Brent
I really liked the long shutter speed one about the milky scences, but I did not get what you were trying tell us about the potraits.
Maybe you went to the wrong post? – the video you are referring to was th review of how shutter speed effects images. This post is how to use a compact camera when you are on holiday – using fill flash when shooting portraits. Cheers, Brent
Thanku dear Brent for the useful info. Want to know whether u used the flash exposure compensation here or clicked with full strength of fill flash??
I just turned the flash on, default settings. Brent
