Have you ever wondered how we get those great portrait or model images, even on a bright sunny day?
I have put together a short video where I show you:
How I go about photographing a portrait/model in the sun.
How I position the model and myself
What settings I use, and why
How I get that shallow depth of field
Analyse the images afterwards
How to talk to the model for best results
I hope you learned something and hope it helped you improve your portrait photography skills. If you have questions, do leave a comment below and I’ll get back to you.

Hi Brent,
I really like this video as the explanatiuon will help me to photograph my grandchildren (if they sit still long enough).
Hi Phil. You might want to checkout my course on how to photograph kids. https://brentmailphotography.com/shop/how-to-photograph-kids-naturally Brent
Wonderful results.. Super-like!
we pick what you keep saying while shooting.
Thanks a lot!
Hi Brent,
Thanks for the videos it’s all starting to come together, actually starting to understand all you teach. Keep up the good work.
Awesome. Brent
love these videos-I'm learning so much.
thanks good job
Brent, I think this video is really well done and has some really great tips in it. I find that the background music you have is distracting, particularly when you are going over some of the more tecnical aspects of what you are covering. As with your other videos I have seen, I appreciate that you are really clear in your instruction.
Cheers!
Thanks for your feedback Amy, Yup, bg music has changed in my newer videos. Brent
I like your emails and videos. I find it very frustrating that I know most of this stuff, but I'm still willing to watch, listen, and learn all that I can. Even stuff I've gone over before. I pride myself in getting the best quality I can from shoots. Yet, I still see many Facebook "Faux-tgraphers" getting jobs while I'm left with nothing. And they follow NONE of the simple tips you've been showing. Doing a shoot like this on the beach with nothing more than a Rebel body and a "kit" level lens. No fill flash at all. But, I'm glad to see people here who are willing to learn simple steps to improve their shots, and you show them in an easy to learn fashion. 🙂
Thanks – Why not send me an email, would love to chat about your photo business. Brent
Thanks Brent, you are awesome teacher too.. As a photography lover and beginer I am trying to learn from your training videos. It would be helpful if you could post camera settings separately in traning post.
Thank you very much and expecting lot of training videos on basics 😉
Many more posts to come. Brent
Very nice. Really good to see you interact with your model; you set a fine example.
You speak fine. Text is a bit hard to read, maybe use a shaded background.
What does "catch light" mean?
Well done.
Catch light is the little reflection in her eye – the white dot in her pupil. Makes her look alive. Brent
Wonderful! Love the videos. Learning so much! Thank you!
As a beginner (even at 66, lol), I found this educational video really useful and I love the results of your shoot.
As I’m Spanish, light is always a problem; even in winter we have extremely strong sunlight to deal with.
My first reflex is an inexpensive Sony alpha330 and to date I always shoot in Auto mode. However, this video was so helpful that I feel encouraged to start using manual settings and, although I do not possess a zoom lens (which I was astounded to discover is more costly than the camera itself) your tutorial has given me more confidence to experiment.
Thank you very much and congratulations on your shoot; the result, even before processing, is excellent.
Go out there and experiment – you might be surprised. Brent
Great topic. I agree seeing the camera setting when u shot is key. Even though this is beginner series it would have been good to mention other related topics. Other setting options, using lens hood, Bokeh, lens flair and reflector.
I would have thought having model hold gold reflector or an umbrella may have added a little extra to video without distracting from topic.
Can't use reflector here in Aus, too bright – model will be squinting. I do use a diffusor though, to make shade when we can. Brent
Great video! Really helpful. Can you just print the camera settings, like you print the other short info on the video?
Do you mean display it on the video? I’m starting to do that on all my new videos. Thanks, Brent
Brent,
good job on this. Really tough to shoot in afternoon sun. Great tips on dealing with it. Agree on the shoulder brightness in one picture where you mentioned it. Good tip on the fill flash compensation.
Cheers
Natalie
Thanks Natalie. B
