Update: Just seen this video being judged….Silver Award!!! Wow, can’t believe it. Happy.
Shhh, please keep this one quiet…
I have created a new movie, and I will be submitting this movie for judging at the Australian Professional Photography Awards soon, and I don’t want any of the judges to see it before the judging is over. It had been submitted into the fusion category which involves still images as well as video, in a 2minute 30 seccond long movie.
This movie took me 3 days to shoot and edit, and I wanted to share it with you. It’s a story about how I create my hand crafted fine art prints, from start to finish, and there are a few more hand crafted things in this video, can you spot them? Make sure you watch this in HD, and maximise the screen, crank up the volume.
Notice the 2 lights I used on the left. The main light illuminated the wall and (framed print) and the other light illuminated the bottle of wine and glass. Below if the final image after processing in Adobe Lightroom.
What do you think? Please leave comments below.
Have a great day. Brent
I enjoyed this. What a great blend of what’s possible and compelling in a reasonable amount of time with a story that coaches and excites. Thanks, Jean
Thanks Jean. B
What can I say? In your DSLR for beginners course you talk about 7 key elements for making good photos. The last one is “inspiration”. I can really say now is that Brent Mail one of my inspirations! Thank you for that!
Thanks Macie – yes inspiration is very important in photography. B
Hi Brent,
Thanks for sharing your video and i must say its very good i love the way you are so real in your teaching, and i have spent so many hours watching and learning from your videos over the last few week i feel i know you. I just think the way you have shown exactly how you work and the beauty of your photography and to show how to frame and how you capture the photo, all i can say you deserve to win this on Merit, on skill and on creativity. Thank you for all you give and the passion you have for teaching. Hope to see you are a winner! in this competition.
Thanks Sharon. Brent
Hi Brent, The video is great, takes you on a photographic journey. What sort or ND filter do you use, the one in the video. Thanks heaps and keep up the great work
10 Stop ND filter – the one I use in my long exposure course: https://brentmailphotography.com/shop/long-exposure-landscape-photography – my favourite filter of all time!
Lovely work. Beautiful image created and hand-crafted using lovely high contrast. Just one question: Who drank this glass of wine? Cheers Edward
OMG, so beautiful so inspiring. I love the way you told your story and all the fantastic in between images and perfect compositions. The mosquito shot was so fun. Please keep it on.
I like the transitions and the way the music show the progress of the “story”! Thanks so much for sharing. Good luck! I really enjoy your lessons!
Excellent work as usual Brent.
I particularly liked the wine glass being emptied lol
Oh and congrats on the Silver mate well deserved !!!!!!
Pete
PS: Who got the Gold and Bronze ?
Very very nice! Appreciate you taking the time to post this!
Thanks Nettie. B
Yes, I enjoyed it too! I especially appreciated the shot of the lighting set up with the studio flash. Your treatment of the seascape has taken it from sunny Australia to stormy UK!
Thanks. Would love to experience stormy uk too. B
Very cool! Great job on the video and great image.
Great video Brent!! And great webpage!! I love the videos to be short but very useful because they give very good informatoin in a little time.
Brent
I absolutely loved it. Great shooting!
Make it look so easy – something I will watch more than once.
Nice one
Cheers
Mark
Thanks Mark. B
I have chosen to go landscape and seascape photography after a few years of doing everything like sport, weddings, nature, pets, and stock photography.I have settled on the scapes side of photography with filters, good lord this is an expensive hobby but do it for the love of modern photography/art.Personaly i don’t go art as to me art is done with a brush and oils etc.
As for your video, don’t like the music it’s to much like all the others out there, and as usual not enough information about the settings required, time of day,how to see the light properly etc, which no doubt you will address in later videos at a price, not for me mate, cheers.
Hi William – I think you missed the point of this video.
It’s not about teaching what I’m doing or how to do it – it’s about showing my passion and how I go from concept to final product. More of an art movie – if you know what I mean:)
Brent
Hi Brent
I loved your video. Thank you for showing it and congratulations on your silver. Heather
Thanks Heather. B
Awesome! Beautiful video! You inspire me, mate. 😀
Awesome – we all need inspiration from time to time. B
A charming and beautiful video. Particularly loved the treck to the photo shoot location and set up. Also the closing frames of the video draining the wine glass. How whimsical.
Thanks Laurie. Yeah I liked that scene – draining the glass. B
Amazing Brent, and congrats on the award. Well deserved. Your creativity really surprises me, thanks!
Thanks Stu. Cheers, Brent
The story is well put together with your complete process. You have a true gift of capturing the moment. And I love the framed piece of art on the wall. I’d be proud to have that in my home.

The video works extremely well Brent and congratulations on the award, the final print looks beautiful.
What filters are you using, I have tried this with my filters (Cokin) but would prefer to get some round ones I think? I do have polarising filters but need new HD filters. margaret
Fantastic! What a beautiful video! Well done, Brent!
Thanks Varina – that means a lot to me. Cheers, B
We really live in paradise here in Port Stephens. Such a picture postcard place.
Love your work! You are such a talented and inspiring person. Congratulations on your award. Well deserved obviously. The video is great. I love the simple little close up shots of everything drawing the viewer to specific focal points instead of looking at a big, busy scene ie. close ups of feet walking, setting up the tripod, printing, framing etc. Keep up the good work.
Thank you for sharing your talent. I love receiving your emails, looking at your photos and watching your videos.
Thank you for sharing!
We do live in paradise – thanks for the lovely comment Yagoda. Cheers, Brent
BRILLIANT! So inspiring to watch you as you ‘handcraft’ yet another masterpiece!
Thanks Melanie, Cheers, Brent
I also loved the video – wish I could spend the day working with you – you make it look so easy! I am a newbie to photography and would like to know what a continuous inking system is
Thanks
Jane
Thanks Jane. You will have a chance soon after we release the video course from the upcoming landscape photography workshop with Jay and Varina. Cheers. Brent
Awesome video! I love all the creativity that photography has to offer and you continue to inspire me to keep learning~thanks
Thanks Deanna. Cheers, Brent
Brent,
the video was very well done. I enjoyed it very much and I am very jealous of your photography skills. I felt I was fairly good but after seeing the pictures you have created it puts me in my place very well. Thank you very much for sharing with us and I love the chair btw. I would love to have something like that for a Prop and one day i hope to find one. Thank you for sharing and keep up the wonderful work. 😀
cheers!
-Katie
Thanks Katie – hope this video inspires you to push your photography up a notch or two. Enjoy. Brent
Hi Brent, once again its me,
and I asked u about the low light night shoot in manual mode how to get it right..my shoots are generally hazy and lowly exposed.
You will need to use a longer exposure, meaning you need a tripod – and a low ISO to get clear images at night.
Hello Brent,
the vedio is very good specially with the stills in it. But is it necessary to use photoshop or in that case any software to get a good photo???cant we get it with our camera.
Very nice video. Very impressive. Have one question. What type of filter you used. Will it be compatible with all type of lenses?
Yes Imran, I use a filter kit for these long exposure landscape images – checkout my long exposure course, I go into much detail about filters and where I get them from. Cheers, Brent
VERY IMPRESSIVE! Your video captured not only the process but it played like a mind map to the world of professional photography. One can not only place themselves in the process, but also feel the anticipation of the shot at the moment the picture was captured.
Thank you for a moment in time, to be remembered!
Exactly what I want to be able to do with the great results you achieve. Learn something new from each and every video you are kind enough to share with us. Thank you Brent.
No worries Gary. Cheers Brent
Brent Brent Brent u r just amazing guy, I am speechless.
Hi Brent, cool informative video; well done on your award!…anyway, I noticed that the wind was blowing whilst you shot the long exposure, and I have a question; at what point do you decide not to shoot due to the wind perhaps causing your camera to move slightly and thereby ruining the shot?
I have a sturdy tripod so the wind needs to be really blowing for me to abandon the shoot – like over 20 knots or so. Wind is good when shooting long exposure images because it means that the clouds are moving. Brent
Love video with still shots, tells the story well, new at photography but learning from one of the best–YOU, ThANKS.
Thanks Donald. My head is getting bigger!
A great video.
Loved it start to finish quite inspiring , what is that frame maker looks very handy
Regards
Pete

I can't explain, but I think they are great! I like them
For me this is worth watching more than once. There is so much one misses at the first viewing. I wish you good luck with the APPA, though 'luck' is only part of it. It is clear that this video was done with a very skilled hand!
Thanks Elton for the kind words.
I was lucky to win the silver, maybe next time a gold?
Brent
Just plain sweet!

thank you Brent.
So happy you are inspired Damien, go out there and start shooting. Brent
Hi Brent,
Interesting mixture of stills and video clips. Great atmosphere created in the way you used lighting for the final slide.
Regards,
Lois
Thx Lois. That last scene took me 3 hours to setup properly for 3 images.
Glad you like it. Brent
Great work! Sorry, I have to share this! 🙂
Great work Brent. One of the things that I like most about photography is that what seems simple, really isnt, yet when displayed correctly, is simply beautiful.
Great video!!
Nice, must get one of those neutral density filters and give it a go. What length of exposure do you need?
Thanks.
jaja.. nice work! sorry nice passion 🙂
hai brent, thank u so much dear.
Simply Love it !!
A great video.
Hey Brent, I like it very much… It's so creative, pleased that some of your moms incredible talent is with you…
Llewellyn
Thanks Llewellyn, great to catch up with the family in SA. B
Hi Brent, you truely have talent. I thought your photos were absolutely breathtaking! 🙂
Thanks for the ebook, have a wonderful day!!
i did watch the short movie impressive video. I was quite impress with the photo of the ocean, the printing the framing. Seeing the wine bottle disappear in the movie meant it was good.
I love to make wine disappear – I get better every year!
Fun and simple; nice story for all with enough nuggets to provoke thought and imagination… well done! Fill that glass back up!! Cheers!!!!
Lovely, I love watching you work.
Fantastic idea for a fusion, fantastic image, well put together, well done!
Good luck with the submission mate. You make everything look so easy and I KNOW it’s not…lol.
Brilliant and inspiring….. I thought the image in colour was excellent but then in B&W was amazing, I am looking at some of my images now to see how they look in black and white. What conversion software did you use?
Best of luck with the awards. :):)
Lightroom and then Nik Silver Efex Pro plugin for photoshop and lightroom, then final edit in photoshop. Printed on my own printer with 6 monochrome ink tanks. Wild! Brent
Thnx…
Loved it! Clean, clear, concise. You’ve come such a long way from the days when we used to surf in Durbs – floating, paddling around and talking – and dreaming – of doing great things “one day”. And now you ARE doing great things! Well done buddy!
Your biggest fan
Kev
Thanks buddy, still miss the surfing days though. Going to be in South Africa again in 6 weeks time. Brent
Loved the video, you deserved your glass of wine at the end.
It’s a dull wet grey day here in the UK and you cheered us up with this.
Good luck in the competition.
Glad this video cheered you up, that is why I make them – to teach and to inspire others. Brent
A very smooth flowing “photo-documentary”, detailing from start to finish. Very well done!!!
A very inspiring video. I’m just turning the corner and start printing some of my pictures.
Good luck!!
Hi Brett,
Loved your video. Good luck with the competition.
Fabulous image and video Brent! You have an incredible “back yard”. A very quick but informative peek into your artistic processes. I assume you also constructed the frame, do you do your own matting as well?
Oh yeah, how was the wine? I noticed the empty glass. lol
Good luck with the competition ;))
Linda
Don’t do my own matting or framing, leave that to the pro’s. Yes, I’m getting very good at making the wine disappear, especially the shiraz…nice.
very nice! Love the finished photo.
Noticed the Continuous Inking System (CIS), just purchased one myself. Now I am not afraid to make prints.
Good Luck on the contest.
Yes, just got the CIS working. I will make a video on how I did it soon. Cheers, Brent
What can I say, love it. Hope you win.
Quite a nice video. Well-thought out and executed. Good luck in the competition!
Thanks – comp went really well – Silver award! WOW. Brent
Very nice and inspiring! Thank you so much! I’ll have to do me one too!
Inspirational Brent. Just what I needed to make me get out and do it. PS – Was this shot on the Central Coast?
Best,
Steve.
Thanks Steve, I love to inspire others. Shot this just down the road from where I live, in Anna Bay. Have a great day. Brent
Nothing like Silver Efex Pro to give you a helping hand.
Nice video. Simple. Tells the story well.
Thanks Warrick. Yes, I love any software that simplifies the process, or gives me more control in my final art. Brent
