What is Photo Profit?
Hey guys Brent Mail here and welcome to the very first episode of Photo Profit the podcast where we look at the business of photography.
So what is this podcast all about?
Well it’s a weekly podcast interview where I interview expert in a certain field when it comes to the business of photography.
The Best Advice for your Photo Business
I dig really deep to find out what’s working for them and their struggles so we can all learn to make more profit in our own photography businesses.
You know if you apply the things that we talked about you don’t have to make the same mistakes as some of these people and you can make a better profit in your photography business. And I guess that’s really what it’s all about.

And how we can actually apply this to our own photography business?
Why I’m Qualified?
So what makes me the person to actually start this podcast? What makes me the expert here?
Let me tell you a little bit about my story.
So I guess I’ve tried everything when it comes to photography and making money from photography. I’ve done weddings, portraits; I had a portrait photography studio. I just sold it for a very good price. I’ve done commercial photography. I’ve published a landscape photography book which is now sold out; sold 5,000 copies. I’ve done joint ventures with other photographers. We created education products, videos. I’ve basically done it all.
I’ve also had a bit of a struggle in the last 10 years of doing it and I’ve learned a lot from other photographers. I have burnt out at one stage. I was in bed for 2 weeks you know just working too hard like doing too many things and doing the wrong things; realizing that my real estate photography business was actually not profitable.
You know once I actually stopped and looked at everything I realize that it’s just wasn’t doing it for me so I had to change. And I realized that you know if you learn from other people you do the smart things, you do the right things. You can actually make a really good life out of it.
So once I hit that low point and hit burnt out and we were in debt. I had a lot of things happening all at once. I started to dig myself out. I started to go on conferences and seminars and I started to learn from other great photographers out there. What was working for them and I applied these things to my business and I morph my business from being a wedding and portrait and real estate and commercial and model and landscape photography business. So basically did any kind of photography for money. I niched down to just doing family portraits on the beach. And that was when I started really seeing difference in my business. I went from making you know a hundred dollars per family on average; to averaging $1500 dollars per family at the end. Some of the sales were like in the $3K to $4K to $5K marks per family. So I managed to figure that out.
And the only I did that was learning what was working in other people’s businesses. And I’ve just sold my business so it’s going really well. I’ve built it out over 8 to 10 years. And I sold it for a very good price. And the new person who’s bought it is in there now and he’s cranking. I know I just recently done that so it’s giving me a chance to step away from it all and actually start all these things like this podcast. I’ve also got a bunch of videos online that I sell some course, digital photography courses. I’ve done joint ventures with other great photographers around the world. And I’ve also got a photography community; a paid community where people are in there all the time asking questions and I’m helping them. So I guess I’ve done it all.
And what really interests me is the business of photography because I made a really good life out of photography and making money. Just so you guys know every year that I’ve been in this photography business, once we actually figure things out we’ve taken an overseas trip for the family. I also managed to get my business so systematized and so tweak that I was able to work instead of working 6 days a week like I was before, I managed to work 2 and a half days a week. I can still make the same amount of profit as I did when I worked 6 days a week and I have 3 or 4 employees working for me.
So I guess I’ve tried it all. I’ve learned from other people.
Helping Other Photographers Succeed
I want to help you know now become successful and not actually kill yourself in your business. And not making what you should be making in your business and working too hard. So that’s where I am now.
It’s basically, I don’t want you to struggle like I did and I don’t want you to work yourself to death like I almost did. I want you to learn from my mistakes and my success and the other photographers that I interviewed mistakes and success. You can make more profit in your photography business and enjoy it more. So if you’re just starting out or maybe already running a photography business and you wanna make more profit and work less.
